JOB SUMMARY: Provides professional library services in a branch library or central library unit. May oversee the daily activities of a central library unit or branch library, to ensure effective use of its facilities. Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Interacts with library patrons to assist them in selecting materials and meeting informational needs. Searches on-line catalog, databases and print sources to answer complex patron inquiries. Directs assigned staff and oversees activities in a branch or central library department. Keeps statistical records of unit activities and prepares appropriate reports. Performs collection development; recommends materials for selection, prepares orders, weeds damaged and out-dated materials. Attends conferences, training and workshops as appropriate. Provides guidance and support to staff in the use of bibliographic and computer-assisted services. Represents the library system at schools, community groups or professional associations. Plans and conducts tours and programs for adults and/or children. Recommends changes in policies and procedures. In the Youth Services Department, plans, conducts and oversees story time, Summer Reading Club programs and other youth-related activities. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the unit, reports problems with building and grounds, performs inventory, recommends equipment for purchase. Interviews, trains, prepare work schedules, supervise and reviews performance of assigned staff. Recommends selection of new employees, employee transfers/promotions, disciplining and discharging employees. Prepares preliminary unit budget. Tracks and monitors budget expenditures. Attends monthly collection development, database, Branch Managers and Department Head meetings. Classifies and catalogs library materials using OCLC cataloging module, and Horizon ILS. Performs original and copy cataloging. Interviews, hires, trains and supervises the Support Services staff. Assists with database maintenance, including maintenance of authority files and holding deletions, in both the library catalog and OCLC database. Assists in creating, maintaining, and checking-in serial records. Reviews cataloging by paraprofessional staff. Reviews processing by clerical staff as well as data entered into the automated system, checking for quality of processing and accuracy. Recommends procedural and workflow changes in department to increase efficiency and accommodate change and growth. Assists in developing department procedure manuals. Assists in general re-classification projects. Attends conferences, training and workshops as appropriate. Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers. REQUIREMENTS: Master s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school. Two years job related experience; post MLS experience preferred. Computer skills; Good verbal and written communication, supervisory and organizational skills; Interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, other employees and elected officials; Ability to complete assigned projects in a timely manner. Knowledge of current library practices and technologies in the department. Requires evening and weekend work as assigned. SALARY RANGE: Professional/Management Grade 10, $1,757.60 - $2,068.00 biweekly based on qualifications AVAILABLE: Monday, April 9, 2018
